Preparation for the UN Day of Vesak 2019 in Ha Nam

The United Nations Day of Vesak 2019 for the third time is held in Vietnam on May 12th-14th 2019, at Tam Chuc Pagoda, Ba Sao commune, Kim Bang District, Ha Nam Province, with participants from 115 countries and more than 20,000 delegates inside the country. Up to now, all preparations for the UN Day of Vesak celebration have been basically completed.

Only two days away, the UN Day of Vesak Festival 2019 will officially be taken place at the Tam Chuc Buddhist Cultural Center, Ha Nam Province. Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien, Vice President of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Council cum General Secretary of Organising Committee UNDV 2019, said “There are now more than 1,600 international delegates from 115 countries confirmed to come to Vietnam to attend this important event. In particular, the appearance of many Sangharajas, Supreme Patriarch, leaders of Buddhist associations, heads of states, ambassadors of countries and scholars attended.” In particular, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam will attend and delivery speech at the opening ceremony.

Most Venerable Thich Nhat Tu, Deputy General Secretary of Organising Committee UNDV 2019 confirmed: “the UN Day of Vesak 2019 is held on a larger scale than previous events, with the participation of many countries and territories, and many papers for the international conference ever. This is also the first time many heads of states attended the ceremony”.

Until the present time (10/5/2019), preparations for the UN Day of Vesak celebration have been basically completed. All are urgently going into the final finishing stages. Particularly the Main hall, where the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony were basically completed. Currently the organizers are in the process of finalizing the final decoration.

To ensure safety for guests, delegates, Buddhists domestic and abroad to attend the ceremony, hotels, spiritual and historical cultural tours have all been well prepared. Around 7200 volunteers are ready to work with the sub-committees, to serve this Great Festival. So far, the organizers have bought insurance for thousands of delegates to attend, demonstrating the goodwill and friendship of the organizers for this festival.

On the security side, Ministry of Public Security, the public security units, Ha Nam Provincial Police Department, Hanoi Police Department did roll out plans to ensure security and order for this event. Leaders of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha also set up a security management center in the areas where are in front of Tam Chuc International Conference Center, to ensure optimal safety for attendees.

During the past several months, every day more than 3000 workers, engineers split shifts, worked quickly all day and night, to keep up on time with the organization’s schedule for this event. According to the reporter's observations, currently the Tam Chuc International Conference Center and other works have been carefully prepared, the flags, banners, messages, rituals and decorations have been prepared. Seven giant lotus lanterns were launched brilliantly and shimmering on Tam Chuc lake.

Up to now, facilities and infrastructure works have basically completed on schedule. In particular, asphalt roads, concrete roads leading to Tam Chuc Pagoda, the road around Tam Chuc Lake, Tam Chuc Bridge, the receptions center, ... has been completed.

In 2000, for the first time, the UN Day of Vesak was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA with the participation of 34 countries. Since then, the UN Day of Vesak has been held annually in many countries around the world. Vietnam hosted the UN Day of Vesak Festival, for the third time, with the theme: “Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies”. This is an important external event that has contributed to affirming the international integration of Vietnam and Vietnamese Buddhism. This event is a valuable opportunity to promote Vietnamese image, country and people, especially the continuous development of Vietnamese Buddhism on international maps over the past 2,000 years.
