UNITED NATIONS DAY OF VESAK OPENS
The 16th United Nations Day of Vesak celebration opened this morning at Tam Chuc Pagoda in the northern province of Ha Nam.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attends the opening ceremony.
Under the theme "Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibility for Sustainable Societies”, the UN Vesak 2019 is expected to promote core values of Buddhism for addressing current global challenges, as well as strengthening the friendship and cooperation between peoples and cultures, and work together for bringing the good values of Buddhism into the current societies.
This is the 3rd time Viet Nam hosts the United Nations Day of Vesak.
The event draws the participation of a record delegates of more than 1,650, including Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, President of Myanmar Win Myint, Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu, Chairman of the National Council (Upper House) of Bhutan Tashi Dorji, Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana and others from 115 countries and territories across the world, according to the Organizing Committee.
Prime Minister Phuc, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, President of Myanmar Win Myint, Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu, Chairman of the National Council (Upper House) of Bhutan Tashi Dorji, and Vice Secretary-General of the United Nations will deliver remarks at the opening ceremony.
The Organzing Committee said it has received more than 500 speeches by local and foreign scholars that will be presented at forums within the framework of the UN Day of Vesak 2019.
The UN Day of Vesak Celebrations is internationally a cultural and humanistic festival of the United Nations International Organizing Committee. The established process of this celebration commenced in year 2000.
On 15th December 1999, at the 54th conference of the United Nations General Assembly, after discussing item agenda 174 of the program, the General Assembly was officially recognized and acknowledged the celebration or the Day of Vesak (commemorate three days, the birth of the Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment and his passing away, equivalent time is the Full Moon day in the month of May).
This day is called the UN Day of Vesak Celebration and considered as the UN Day of religious cultural festival. The celebration will be held at the United Nations Headquarters (New York city, USA), and its Regional Offices over the world from the year 2000 onwards.
In 2000, first time the UN Day of Vesak Celebration was solemnly held at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, with representatives of Buddhist traditions from 34 countries.
